Bayfield is located 18 miles east of Durango on State
highway 160. 1,248 students are served within three
school buildings: Bayfield Elementary is a K-5 school;
Bayfield Middle School encompasses grades 6, 7; and
8 and the high school serves grades 9-12. School buildings
with the district are in excellent condition. The
Elementary building is 13 years old, a remodeled building
will saw its first year of use as a middle school
in the 2001-02 school year, and the high school has
been in use for 4 years. A new athletic complex was
completed at the high school last year.
Parents and community members form a viable and active
part of the school community. The Parent, Student,
Teacher Association provides support for the elementary
school through volunteer programs, informational support
for parents and recognition for teachers and other
school employees. Each of the three district schools
maintains its own accountability committee, which
gathers data and reports on various indicators of
school success. The District Advisory and Accountability
Committee works with district leaders to set community
supported district goals. Within the high school,
a strong Vocational Advisory Council recommends appropriate
directions for vocational programs.
